NEW YORK — It’s a question that can only be answered by getting a wedding planner’s license.
And, as many as 90 percent of wedding planners have one, according to the wedding planning industry trade group, The Wedding Planning Council.
The issue of licensing and certification is becoming a hot topic, particularly in the tech sector, where some people are worried about licensing laws limiting the amount of tech companies that can be certified.
It’s even a subject of discussion at the annual convention of the Association of Wedding Producers, where organizers from around the country talk about how to license more wedding planners.
“The more of a digital footprint that you have, the more of an impact it has on your business,” said Tom Sussman, president of the association.
“And the more information you have to communicate with customers, the less likely they are to trust you, to trust your company, to feel comfortable.”
Many people, including wedding planners, say that if you are licensed and can certify all your employees, you have a very high level of confidence in your ability to perform.
“That’s a very good thing for everybody,” said Sharon Ewing, a wedding planning educator at the University of Southern California.
“If you have all of the right licenses, you’re going to be able to do what you do,” said Ewing.
“It’s going to make you a lot more competitive.”
But there’s also a downside to having such high levels of professional certification.
It can be very expensive to get one.
The fees for licensing, as well as the amount that is required to certify a person, vary by state.
Some states charge $75 to $250 for the first license and $150 to $200 for subsequent licenses.
In New York, for example, a new license will cost $3,000.
But for the licensed couple, the cost is $11,000, and that’s before the $6,000 fee that comes with getting a certificate of fitness.
“I don’t know if that’s going be a good thing,” said Sara Storch, a licensed marriage and family therapist in New York City.
“You’re going into a state that has a very strict set of laws.
You’re going in with all of your ducks in a row.
But you’ve already had a lot of training.”
In addition to licensing requirements, some states also require a background check and a photo ID.
In Texas, the state’s licensing requirements include a background examination and a $10 fee.
But in Utah, the background check is $25.
And in Wisconsin, there’s a $25 fee.
There are also licensing requirements in most of the other states that are required to be obtained, and these requirements can vary from state to state.
“You have to go through an expensive background check process and then have to have an individual who’s a certified person meet with you to provide you with the licenses,” said Sussmen.
“That’s expensive, and the licenses are more expensive than the background checks.
You need to have a licensed professional who knows your business.”
Some states require a licensed groom to have some kind of background check before he is certified.
But in the vast majority of states, the licenses can be issued to people who have never done a background or background check, such as a barber or an accountant.
“We have this concept of licensing a person for life, so you’re never going to get a license unless they have a background and they’ve got the right license,” said Mary Glynn, a certified marriage and relationship therapist in Chicago.
“In fact, a lot [of] the people who get certified have never even done a personal background check.
That’s kind of a big problem.””
I’ve never had a problem with any licensing issue,” she added.”
They do have a process.
There are requirements,” said Storcha.
“If they do the right things and they have all the right paperwork, they can get licensed.
It doesn’t matter what state you’re in.”
The issue is not limited to wedding planning.
A lot of the wedding industry is dealing with issues of credentialing, too.
A group of wedding planning professionals is working to get married in all 50 states by 2020.
It has launched an online tool that allows people to learn more about licensing requirements and the licensing process, and is encouraging more people to come forward and get a wedding license.
“When people see how the licensing and the certification process is handled, it’s a whole new level of professionalism,” said Marjorie Stebbins, the group’s president and CEO.
“People are going to start to look at you as a real business.”
